Different versions suggest different tales. One of the versions tells that Maharaja Agrasen divided his kingdom equally among his 18 children that led to the formation of eighteen Aggarwal Gotras. However, most often the Gotras are counted to be seventeen in number. The other version states the Agrasen’s anticipation with an intension to plan eighteen Mahayajnas.

During the conduction of one such Yajna, the king noticed a horse running away from this reckless spiritual of giving sacrifice by killing it. Witnessing such a drastic scene, Maharaja got loaded with the feeling of empathy for the animals. This made him a true follower of ahimsa i.e. non-violence. From that day, he announced that no such ritual will be performed in his kingdom in the name of any Yajna and stopped the eighteenth Yajna.
As a result the eighteenth Yajna failed to complete and the king performed seventeen and a half Yajanas. The almighty appeared in front of him and blessed him with seventeen and a half Gotras. Later years, the king handed over his throne to his eldest and the most responsible son Vibhu and went to the Vanaprastha Ashram. His heading towards the Ashram was followed by the decline of the city of Agroha and got destructed in a huge fire. In order to get rid of this, the Agrawals moved out of the city and spread in different cities across India.
The reason behind the Agrawals worshipping Nagas (snakes) is due to a belief that Agrasen was married to the daughter of King Kumud of Nagaloka who is said to have owned the snake kingdom during those days.

Agrawals are one of the most respected communities in our country. It is a fact that two of the major ministers of Emperor Akbar belonged to the Agrawals community i.e. Todarmal and Madhushah.
